HOMEOWNER OCCUPIED REPAIR
PROGRAM
IHS understands the housing repair needs in our community. Many people
are on Social Security or other fixed incomes and cannot afford the
upkeep on their home. A new roof is out of the question, but the rain
continues to fall. IHS utilizes volunteers and funding
from private donors, churches, special events, and various grants to
make repairs to homes owned and occupied by low income residents of
the counties we serve.
In 2007 we will organize and supervise over 20,000 hours of volunteer
time on these projects. Priority of service is given to needs
which serve to:
 | prevent homelessness due to the condition of a house |
 | eliminate health and life safety hazards in homes involving
children and elderly |
 | make homes accessible and usable for special needs such as
physical disabilities |
The Homeowner Occupied Repair Program gives
qualifying applicants an interest free loan for the materials needed
to make home repairs themselves. IHS serves as technical support to
the homeowner advising and instructing them step-by-step, but the
homeowner himself actually does the work. Once completed we fix a
value of the material used, and the owner makes payments on the loan
based on their ability to pay. If the homeowner makes all scheduled
payments according to the agreed terms, IHS forgives the final 15% of
the loan. The program recently expanded to
also include Rice, McPherson, Stafford, Pratt, Kingman and Harper Counties.
